NEW YORK (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning to all consumers about the dangers of using prescription drugs in some cases.
The FDA has issued a warning to patients and healthcare providers about using the most common prescription drugs — Viagra, Cialis and Levitra — in the U. S. and elsewhere.
The warning comes just days after reports of serious adverse events, including an allergic reaction to the pills and a heart attack, among others.
The FDA said the agency had asked the National Center for Health Research and the Food and Drug Administration, which is responsible for regulating drug safety, to review safety data in the wake of an FDA report on the safety of prescription drugs.
An analysis of more than 300 health care professionals found that some patients taking these drugs were more likely to experience symptoms of a heart attack or stroke or even death from heart disease, among other conditions.
The FDA also found that in a sample of 3,900 patients treated with Viagra and other prescription drugs, those taking the drugs had a significantly higher risk of serious heart problems than those not taking the drugs.
The agency said it did not know of any cases in which Viagra, Cialis and other prescription drugs were linked to serious heart complications.
A spokesman for the FDA said the agency is still reviewing all of the information.
“Our analysis is not yet complete, but we are working on more information that can be added to the FDA’s labeling,” said Dr. Jorge Puente, a spokesman for the FDA. “We will keep our attention focused on the safety of the drugs.”
Viagra and other drugs that have been linked to heart problems in some cases include the heart drug alprostadil, which is sold under the brand name Propecia and is the only FDA drug to increase the number of blood clots in the lungs.
“It is important to note that Viagra and its generic equivalent, Cialis, have not been studied in any controlled clinical trials,” said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the Public Health Research Group at the Public Health Institute of North America, in an email.
“If you’re taking these drugs you should discuss it with your physician,” Wolfe said. “If they’re causing you serious health problems, we will continue to study them and see if they can be safely used.”
The FDA said it was not aware of any cases of stroke, stroke or heart attack in patients taking the drugs.
Dr. Steven Nissen, a cardiologist at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital, said the agency is taking note of the serious risks involved with these drugs.
“In fact, the FDA has warned the public about the serious risks of these drugs and has also called attention to the potential life-threatening complications associated with these drugs,” said Nissen. “This is important information for health care providers, researchers and patients.”
Viagra and other drugs that have been linked to heart complications include the heart drug sildenafil, sold under the brand name Viagra, among others.
In one clinical trial, people taking sildenafil were found to be at an increased risk of developing angina, a condition in which chest pain is a symptom of heart disease.
The FDA also found that patients taking sildenafil had a higher risk of developing a type of heart attack, or an STIs.
Both Viagra and Cialis, sold by Bayer and GlaxoSmithKline under the brand names Viagra and Cialis, can be bought without a prescription in some countries.
“The safety and efficacy of these drugs, along with the possible side effects of sildenafil and the potential for dangerous drug interactions, have not been well established in controlled clinical trials,” the FDA said in its statement.
The agency said it was not aware of any cases of stroke or stroke-related deaths in patients taking Viagra or other drugs for which a drug interaction may be considered.
